How to do keyword research

What are Keywords?

Whatever we search in Google search is called a search query. Any phrase we search which is common in the search query is called keywords.

For example, if we search these phrases:

  • Rent a car in Chicago
  • Best rates for a rent a car in Chicago
  • I want to rent a car in Chicago
  • What are the best rates to rent a car in Chicago

By looking into the above phrases we find that there are some common words or phrases in all the search queries. Those words which are common become important in Google’s or search engines’ view.

These common phrases are called keywords.

If our site ranks in the first page of the search in avg monthly searches of approx 3000 than we can get some organic traffic from Google.

The most important challenge for SEO experts is to identify keywords for our website.

Keywords vs Search Query:

Every keyword is a search query bt every search query is not a keyword.

We must identify keywords for every page of our website.

Strategy to find keywords:

  1. Relevance: Keywords should be relevant to our website
  2. Searches: Keywords should have reasonable searches.
  3. Competition: If there is a generic keyword it would be too difficult for competing it.
  •            Geographical: Location helps to minimize a generic keyword by limiting it to any specific area.

For every website, we identify 4-5 keywords. But how?

by entering the competitor’s URL or any niche keyword you can find out related keywords.

It is also a paid tool but very useful to do keyword research.

Types of Keywords:

Long-tail keywords: for example niche shoes for men

Short Tail keywords: for example men shoes.

According to the above graph since Long-tail keywords target to the specific audience there is more chance of getting higher conversion rates for the website.

Amongst these, I must choose the best to increase my Conversion rate i.e. converting my websites’ visitors into customers.

In order to increase our conversion rate, we must focus on bringing relevant and targeted people to our website.

Now here we will only focus on 2-3 long-tail keywords which are closet related to our niche keyword while 1-2 short-tail keywords in a writeup 500 words.

The most common mistake that most of the SEO beginners do is that they put all the keywords on a single page.

You can see in the screenshot that we made some subcategories for restaurants according to cuisine, now these must be targeted int he specific page for that particular cuisine otherwise it would lead to Keyword cannibalization

A Real-life example discussed:

Let’s take a scenario for explaining long-tail and short-tail keywords.

While working for a restaurant website I came upon a number of keywords which I could have targetted.

Analyzing these keywords:

We did some research and put the relevant keywords in xls sheet. Here’s the screenshot is given below:

What is Keyword Cannibalization?

When more than one page is targeting the same keyword Google gets confused and eat up both the pages that eat it up.

To resolve this issue we must target the keywords in their particular pages.

Most relevant keywords must be identified and focussed on their own subcategories.

Once keywords are divided into long-tail and short-tail. we must distribute them according to their categories and sub-categories.
